As the “Happiest Place on Earth,” Disneyland is one of the best destinations for families or theme-park lovers. However, while a day at the park can be a lot of fun, not all of the rides and attractions are always open. Here are some key Disneyland ride closures to be aware of during the summer of 2024.
Why Does Disneyland Close Rides?
Disneyland and other theme parks close rides for multiple reasons. One of the most common is to do repairs and refurbishment. Over time, rides can wear down, making them less safe for guests and attendants. This year, all of the rides listed are closed for refurbishment, meaning they should reopen better than ever once the work is finished.
Other reasons why rides may be closed can include:
- Weather – Some outdoor rides may have to be shut down because of too much water or ice on the track. Also, most guests don’t want to ride an attraction if it’s raining, even if they’re wearing ponchos and rain gear. Additionally, taller rides may sway a lot in windy weather, making them unsafe.
- Updates/Overhauls – One of the biggest changes happening at Disney parks is the changeover from Splash Mountain to Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. However, while this is one of the most notable rides to be overhauled, it’s not the first time Disneyland has swapped one ride for another. Typically, this happens when a ride becomes outdated or unpopular, so the park puts in something fresher and more exciting.
- Repairs – Refurbishing a ride means taking care of preventative maintenance and punching up some of the more worn-down elements so they look new. Repairing a ride is when it breaks down and stops working correctly. While ride failures are rare, they can occur from time to time.
Disneyland Ride Closures for Summer 2024
Disneyland Railroad
Starting August 5th, the famous Disneyland Railroad will close down for refurbishment. It’s unclear how long this process will take, but the park will realistically reopen the train in time for Mickey’s Halloween. Since the railroad is the perfect ride for elderly and disabled guests, the park won’t want it to be out of action for too long.
Davy Crockett’s Explorer Canoes
The Explorer Canoes have been around almost since the beginning of Disneyland. However, because of safety concerns, this attraction has been closed for a while as the Imagineers develop newer safety protocols. Since guests are inside free-floating canoes, the park has to ensure that it’s virtually impossible to capsize them.
While an official reopening date hasn’t been set, Disneyland has estimated the canoes should be operational by fall of 2024.
Haunted Mansion
If you’re going this summer, one of the key Disneyland ride closures to be aware of is the Haunted Mansion. This ride is one of the main attractions at the park, especially with the recent film release last year. Also, this attraction is one of the main centerpieces for Mickey’s Halloween Celebration, so it must be open for the spooky season.
According to Disneyland, the Haunted Mansion will be open no later than August 23. While it’s possible that it could be open sooner, we’re not holding our breath. Given how many delays Tiana’s Bayou Adventure has experienced so far, we’re pretty sure the Haunted Mansion won’t open a minute before its deadline.
If August 23rd sounds familiar, that’s the official starting date of Mickey’s Halloween. Since the mansion is part of the opening ceremony, it can’t be closed.
Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
If you go to Disneyland with young children, you’re likely familiar with the Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. While this ride isn’t as popular as some of the others in the park, it’s still a mainstay of the theme park experience.
Apparently, this ride must have quite a few refurbishments and updates, as Disneyland hasn’t set a firm reopening date. The best guess is that it’ll be open by fall, but that could change in the coming months. One thing is for sure, though: you won’t be able to ride it this summer at all.
Space Mountain
Fortunately, Space Mountain is currently open, so if your Disneyland travel plans occur within July, you’ll be able to whizz through space no problem. However, this historic and iconic ride will be closed for refurbishment starting August 5th. As with the railroad, Disneyland hasn’t specified how long these refurbishments and updates will take.
Considering that Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge has cast a shadow over Space Mountain as the latest sci-fi attraction, we believe Disneyland won’t be in too much of a rush to reopen Space Mountain anytime soon. While this ride is still very popular, it’s not as if guests don’t have other options when they want to explore galaxies far, far away.
While Disneyland ride closures can sometimes put a damper on a vacation, they shouldn’t prevent you from having the time of your life!
